Dr. Birman graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, where he obtained Bachelor of Science degrees, summa cum laude, in biomedical engineering and chemical engineering. He earned his medical degree with Honors at Baylor, College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and then completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Dr. Birman completed the Robert E. Carroll Hand& Microvascular Surgery Fellowship program at Columbia University in New York City. Dr. Birman is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Dr. Birman has many publications in peer reviewed journals covering such topics as flexor tendon injuries, hand and wrist infections, thumb basal joint arthritis, factitious disorders, and medical volunteering overseas. He has presented his research findings at several national meetings, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, and the Arthroscopy Association of North America.
His practice encompasses surgery of the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder. Dr. Birman speaks conversational Russian.
